TJ lowered himself into a heavy oak chair and then looked around at the patrons, but before he could speak, Eunice interrupted his thought.
¡§Now, what's going on? Just what is it about Cymbalene's latest scheme that has you ready to spit out feathers?¡¨

TJ scowled at Eunice and looked across the room at Isupoz, the village blacksmith, hunched over his lunchtime board game.

¡§Everything. Cymbalene should keep her ideas to herself. That¡¦s probably why she left her high falutin job to come to NeverWas. I¡¦ll bet they drove her out of town.¡¨

Sheriff Easy had no idea what had brought Cymbalene to NeverWas. In the last year the townsfolk hadn¡¦t found out much about her. She would have told them, but they had never asked. She was considered an outsider, and an outsider she had stayed to townsfolk like TJ.

¡§Whatever could that woman be thinking?¡¨ yelled TJ, again hoping to draw attention from someone, anyone.

Eunice shook her head. ¡§She¡¦s only looking out for the children.¡¨

¡§I suppose,¡¨ muttered Isupoz, who seldom voiced a stronger opinion than that in public.
